Winter is here - Are You Ready?
The days are getting shorter and the temperature is dropping!
As we head into the colder months, many of us start to feel our energy naturally shifting. The bright, expansive energy of summer begins to contract, and our bodies start craving different things - more warmth, more rest, more nourishing foods.
Instead of fighting this seasonal shift, what if we worked with it? Winter isn’t the enemy of energy - it’s just a different kind of energy that requires different strategies.
I’ve learned to think of winter as nature’s invitation to go inward, to slow down, and to focus on the foundations that will sustain us through the darker months.
Here’s how to prepare your energy for winter:
Embrace the slowdown. Your body naturally wants to conserve energy during winter. Stop fighting this and start honouring it. Say yes to earlier bedtimes, longer sleeps, and more restful weekends.
Light up your spaces. As natural light decreases, become intentional about the light in your environment. Invest in good lamps, light candles regularly, and position yourself near windows during daylight hours. Your energy responds directly to light levels.
Nourish differently. Summer foods are light and cooling - salads, smoothies, fresh fruit. Winter energy needs grounding, warming foods. Think hearty soups, slow-cooked meals, warming spices like ginger and cinnamon. Feed your inner fire!
Create cosy energy rituals. Winter is the perfect time for nurturing practices. Hot baths with Epsom salts, reading by the fire, journalling with a warm cup of tea. These aren’t luxuries - they’re energy necessities during the colder months.
Plan for vitamin D support. Reduced sunlight affects more than just your mood - it impacts your physical energy too. Consider supplements, or make the most of sunny winter days by getting outside, even briefly.
Winter doesn’t have to mean energy depletion. When you align with the season instead of resisting it, you can maintain steady, sustainable energy throughout the colder months.
Think of winter as your energy’s restoration season. Just like trees draw their energy inward to strengthen their roots, you can use this time to build the foundations that will support your energy when spring returns.
