Movement: Action Keeps the Darkness Away

Do you ever get stuck in your head?

Overthinking and inaction are two of the biggest energy zappers ever! I recently had a family member who was dealing with some big mental health challenges. Watching her sit for hours (sometimes days) in one spot completely stuck was awful. She was completely paralysed and could not think or see any way forward.

I love the quote "action keeps the darkness away" - it's proven that movement helps us, but the older I get, the more I am noticing how important it is to literally shake out the old and shitty energy that gets stuck in our bodies. Physical activity disrupts rumination cycles and gives our mind something to focus on instead of worries or overthinking.

NEXT TIME YOU GET STUCK IN YOUR HEAD - TRY MOVING!

Most mornings I dance. Sometimes it's for 30 minutes - sometimes guided by instructions in a video and sometimes it's just me jiggling around. This allows me to notice my body - what feels sore, what feels stiff and what needs attention.

Being present in your body helps you get out of your head. The word embodied means feeling at home in your body. I meet so many women who are completely disconnected from their bodies. They do not have a good relationship with their bodies, they are angry at their bodies, or they do not like the way their bodies look or feel.

Embodied presence is about body awareness and coordination. Yoga, martial arts, somatic dance are all activities that demand present-moment attention. You simply can't overthink when you need to focus on physical technique and movement.

BENEFITS INCLUDE:

  • Improved posture and alignment

  • Better body awareness and coordination

  • Increased flexibility and range of motion

  • Reduced muscle tension and physical stress

  • Enhanced balance and stability

  • More efficient movement patterns

  • Reduced anxiety and stress

  • Increased mind-body connection

  • Better emotional awareness and regulation

  • Enhanced creativity and self-expression

  • Deeper sense of embodiment and presence

  • Improved focus and concentration

Our bodies often hold emotional tension. Movement, especially expressive movement, can help release stored stress and process emotions that might otherwise get stuck in mental loops.

HERE ARE MY TIPS FOR DAILY DANCING:

  • Start gently shaking or bouncing

  • Notice your body

  • Stop any thoughts that pop up! Listen to the music and move in the way the music suggests to you

  • You cannot get this wrong!

  • Breathe consciously

  • Move from being fluid and soft into being sharp and hard

  • Do not judge yourself

  • Be gentle - don't overdo it!

  • Lie down at the end and notice how your body feels

I will be doing some somatic dance and movement at my upcoming Energy Festivals! I am so excited about these events. Providing a whole day for people to connect to their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual energy in beautiful settings!
