Is Your Mind Running the Show?
Do you ever feel like your mind is a washing machine stuck on a spin cycle? Thoughts whirling around, making you dizzy with overthinking and what-ifs? You're not alone!
I spent years letting my goldfish thoughts swim endless laps in my head. You know the ones - they swim in one ear, do a lap, and swim out the other. Sometimes they want to do continuous laps! The funny thing is, you own the fishbowl. You get to decide which fish get to stay and which ones need to move along.
Getting in charge of your mental energy is a game-changer. Here's how to start:
Meet Your Fish
First, acknowledge those persistent thoughts swimming around. Are they helpful goldfish bringing you solutions and inspiration? Or are they energy-draining thoughts that keep you stuck in worry and doubt?
Name Your Fish
When a thought appears, try labelling it: "Oh hello there, Worry Fish!" or "Welcome back, Overthinking Fish!" This creates some distance and helps you realise you are not your thoughts.
Train Your Fish
Just like you wouldn't let strangers wander through your house whenever they want, don't let random thoughts stomp around your head uninvited. Start practising:
- Notice when a thought arrives
- Acknowledge it ("I see you there")
- Decide if it's useful
- If not, show it the door!
Clear The Bowl
Schedule regular "fish-clearing" sessions. Sit quietly for 5-10 minutes and imagine netting out all the unhelpful thoughts. You might be surprised how much mental space this creates!
Remember: Your mind is meant to be a tool, not a torture chamber. You are in charge of your mental energy - not the other way around!
This week, practice being the boss of your fishbowl. Notice which thoughts you're allowing to take up residence and which ones need to be released back into the universal sea.
