Spiritual Energy

My favourite definition of spirituality is ‘A sense of connection to something higher than ourselves’. Feeling connected or part of something bigger than my little human self gives me an enormous sense of support and comfort.

People often tell me that they are or are not spiritual. I believe that you are born spiritual! That divinity is your true nature. It's who you were before the world told you who to be!

The first step in building a relationship with the divine or exploring their spirituality is about connecting to yourself. Taking time to notice and awaken your essence. It's about developing an understanding of your connection with the entire universe.

The concept of universal energy was introduced to me when I was 18 years old. I was able to see myself as a tiny speck of glitter. A tiny fragment of light that was suspended and able to travel through time and space!

Being a tiny fragment that is supported in an invisible hammock of energy is very comforting and stops me from getting too tied up in my own importance.

I believe that my soul has had many lives. That in this life, I am a woman called Lisa. I do not think of death as an end but more of a transformation.

Deciding what you believe can be a big job - or not! The more I learn, the less I know and I like the idea of constantly developing my beliefs over time.

If you are looking for a place to start - start with some big questions:

Where do you believe you go when you die?
Do you think that you have lived before or can reincarnate after death?
Do you believe that our lives are predestined or that you are in complete control of everything that happens to you
Getting comfortable with thinking about these topics and opening conversations with those around you will help you to start to feel into what you believe.

Here are my four best tips for developing your spiritual energy:

  1. You do not need a guru.
I love the saying that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. This may not be an actual person – it might be a book, a course or a workshop. Being curious and open-minded will serve you well when considering spiritual beliefs. Noticing how you feel and what you think when considering other people's beliefs is a much nicer energy than judging and condemning people. Asking yourself 'why' you respond to something.
Take a teaspoon of all the ideas offered to you and create a belief system that suits you.

  2. There is no race to win or levels you need to achieve!
There is no finish line to cross. One mountain will lead you to another; one book will open you up to another. Spirituality is a relationship between you and the universe that you live in. It is a continuous process of evolution and growth. Beware of people who judge you, push you or try to make you believe that there are levels that you need to achieve. Connection is not something you achieve. It's a constant process of learning, understanding and personal growth.

  3. Being spiritual doesn’t mean you are always positive!
Being in a constant state of gratitude and positivity is not the goal. Being connected to yourself and making peace with people and situations is one of the benefits.
Constant pretending is toxic. You are still a person having a human experience.

  4. You can be spiritual and religious at the same time.
The truth is, you can be whatever you want! Your spiritual essence is a personal path that may or may not include an organised community with scriptures and a church. Your soul doesn’t differentiate between spirituality and religion! Some of the most inspiring spiritual teachers I know work with bibles, angels, crystals, prayers, tantra – all of the things!

LISA LOVES:

You Can Heal Your Life

This is the book that started my learning about the Universe and the power of belief. Louise Hay is, in my opinion, one of the greatest teachers of all time. Over 35 million copies of this book have been printed in 30 languages! This version is a beautifully illustrated one that sits beside my bed every day.
