Guarding Your Energy Bank Account

My early life was filled with 'yes'. Yes to every request, every invitation, every opportunity. I thought being helpful and available made me a good person. Instead, it made me an exhausted person!

Think of your energy like a bank account. Every time you say yes to something, you're making a withdrawal. The problem is, many of us are constantly overdrawn! We keep giving and giving until there's nothing left in the tank.

Learning to say no has been one of my greatest energy lessons. Not a guilty, apologetic, "I'm so sorry but..." kind of no. A clear, confident "No, that doesn't work for me" kind of no. The kind of no that honors your energy bank balance.

When you start treating your energy like currency, you get very choosy about how you spend it. You realize that:

  • Every yes to someone else is often a no to yourself.

  • No is a complete sentence.

  • Saying no to what drains you leaves room to say yes to what fills you.

  • Your energy is finite and precious.

Smart ways to say no:

  • "Thank you for thinking of me, but I'll pass."

  • "That's not something I can commit to right now."

  • "I need to protect my energy for other commitments."

  • "No, but I wish you well with it."

Remember: saying no doesn't make you a bad person. It makes you a smart energy manager! The world needs your energy for the things that truly matter to you.

This week, practice:

  • Pausing before saying yes

  • Being honest about your energy capacity

  • Trusting your gut when it says no

  • Celebrating your boundary-setting wins

Your no is as valuable as your yes. Use it wisely!
