Checking in with Your Body
When your body feels good, you have more energy. It’s a pretty simple equation. Having a body requires investment. Spending money on tools, equipment & treats all supports your physical energy.
Think of your body as your friend. Give it what it needs to function well and you will benefit! Noticing what your body needs takes some effort. You need to connect to how your body is feeling. Take time to check in, to listen to the messages and wisdom that your body is holding.
Taking time to move out of your head and connect with your body is the first step. You cannot love something you do not feel connected to. You need to make time to connect and be in awe of your incredible body. I am in constant awe of what our bodies can do and do do! Our hearts beat, our joints bend and our eyes see. Take a moment to consider the crazy systems that are living and working in your body right now!
I do this with a vertical check-in:
1. Lie down.
2. Breathe slowly for a few breaths.
3. Wiggle your fingers and your toes. Roll your limbs from side to side.
4. How are your feet feeling? Are they sore or tired?
5. How do your legs feel? Are they heavy or restless?
6. How do your hips and bum feel? Are they tight and clenched?
7. How is your tummy? Is it uneasy or knotty?
8. How does your chest feel? Is it tight or restricted?
9. How do your shoulders feel? Are they heavy and burdened?
10. How is your head? Is it foggy or tense?
Having regular check-ins with your body is important. Listen to it. Ask it questions. Your body holds so much wisdom and is constantly sending you signals; it will show you what you need if you listen carefully.
There are lots of things that you can ‘do’ for increased physical energy, but there are also lots of tools you can buy to support your body.
Here is my list of essential body equipment:
For Sleeping:
Replacing an old bed can be a game changer. If that's not an option, then investing in topper pads can be a lower-cost option. I am obsessed with supportive pillows - I have a very heavy head and love cold, firm latex pillows. They stop me from tossing and turning, lower my temperature, and stop my hair from getting messed up!
New sheets can add so much comfort. I am a big fan of linen sheets, I love the rough texture and airy feel. Regularly replacing duvet inners and blankets will also make your bed a more snuggly sanctuary!
For Work:
A supportive office chair or standing desk are great way to offer your body more work support. Many of us spend 40 hours at work and it's important to have things that are good for you and your body.
For Exercise:
Well-fitted supportive walking shoes are a must. Walking in old dead shoes or new shoes that do not support your foot well can open up a number of mechanical issues with your back, knees, and hips.
A decent sports bra is very important if doing any high-impact fitness. Having the right clothing can be quite motivating when feeling fit and focused.
For Relaxation:
A massage gun - see below
A Shakti acupressure mat for pressure points and self-massage.
Foam rollers for stretching out your back. I love the lotus wheels for evening back stretches.
Aromatherapy diffuser: I have one for relaxation in the bedroom filled with lavender oil and one for motivation filled with lemongrass & basil in my office.
LISA LOVES:
This little gun is incredible. Small enough to carry when you travel but powerful enough to iron out wrinkled or twisted muscles!
