Pockets of Perfect
I spoke at an amazing event yesterday to 1,400 incredible humans who work in special education.
1,400 people who care, who are committed to the work that they do - to improving the lives of children who need more help and understanding than most.
On the way out, a woman stopped me. She thanked me for my session and explained that she was having a really hard time and needed to hear my messages.
It’s always so lovely when people have the courage to come up and say that something I said impacted them! Shifting people’s energy and thinking is my job and it’s a joy to be given the honour of large rooms like I was yesterday.
The woman standing in the lobby was close to tears, her skin was thin, I could feel her angst. I asked her if she needed a hug. She melted. We talked about how hard it is to be a human sometimes. How huge the invisible load is that so many people are carrying around. She asked me what the answer was. Without knowing anything about her, I suggested she try “pockets of perfect”.
Pockets of perfect are tiny moments where you allow yourself perfection. Where you notice how perfect something is. It’s a wonderful respite from problems, from stress and it’s an excellent way to retrain your head with tiny examples of pure goodness.
A pocket of perfect could be a moment in the sunshine. It could be a coffee in the perfect cup. It could be your feet in the ocean. It’s about giving yourself a micro dose of happiness and the permission to enjoy only that!
We all have the ability to have and create pockets of perfect.
I asked the woman in the lobby what was something that could make her feel better in that moment and her face lit up. She knew straight away. It was a phone call. She went to call someone special.
Last week, I had a friend in a crisis. The world had climbed on top of her and she felt heavy and hopeless. We made a plan.
Clear the decks. We created some space. The energy she was in needed honouring. It was demanding her attention. We cancelled all the stuff that didn’t matter. We gave her some space and permission to put down some of her responsibilities, while she reconnected with herself.
Create a small win. One piece of action that would instantly help but felt doable. It could be making an appointment. Buying a supplement- a tiny step in a good direction.
Surrender to being a learner. Everything is a teacher. What is this situation here to teach you? How could it help? What’s the upside? Upsides are hard to find but they are always there. Buried deep in the rubble of where you are at.
That’s the hard thing about hard times. You can’t see the up. It feels like there is no up. Pockets of perfect help. A good friend can help you see the wood when everything feels like trees.
Little things can make a big difference!
