How's your Brand?

As a teenager, Victoria Beckham’s ambition was not to be better than her mates or even to be a singer or a fashion designer. Asked when interviewed for the Spice Girls, what she wanted to be when she grew up she said she dreamed of being as famous as ‘Persil Automatic’.

She wanted to be a world brand. Not only did she dream about it, she wanted it enough to go about getting it. Her yardstick of fame was a household brand. As funny as that sounded way back then it is that very imagination that has got her to where she is today. A household name!

I like to think of all of us as brand managers. We all have a personal brand to manage. I meet professional people everyday that are completely unaware of their lack of personal branding. Building a business is hard work and its takes up an enormous part of your life. Many self employed people tell me that they cannot afford to spend time on worrying about how they look - my argument is you cannot afford not to.

The visual receptors in our brains are geared to notice things that look good - if you are visibly pleasing you are 7 times more likely to get peoples attention than if you look like you don't care. In our fast paced world where our attention spans are reducing by the day, it only takes 4 seconds for us to make a judgement about someone when we meet them. I think that it is incredibly important to know what your personal brand values are and what you want to represent.

What are your personal brand values?

Do you look how you want to?

What is the purpose of your business or role?

Knowing how you want to look and looking how you want to are incredibly important. When how you look and how you feel match you start to feel at home wherever you are. You walk taller, you think more clearly. The world then resounds accordingly.Once you know what you stand for then your life becomes incredibly easy.

How do you want the world to see you?

I started my working life as a packaging artist. I am actually still a packaging artist - just instead of packaging products I now package people! See its all branding. You are in charge of your branding. You all dress yourselves every morning. We have have all had days when you have avoided people because you look like crap - or felt super smart and felt like you could take on the world.

Have a think about how your personal brand is working for you and what you would like to change.

If you are in business and would like to be more ‘buyable’ then my one day BrandYou Workshop is for you… Limited to 12 people - don't miss out.
